Biography

Born in Glasgow, 1962 I migrated to Australia in 1990 with my Australian husband, making Newcastle my permanent home. I commenced my studies at the University of Newcastle in 2000, where upon completion of a Bachelor of Fine Art Honours degree I received the Faculty and University Medal. I continued my studies with an APA Scholarship, gaining a Doctor of Philosophy, Fine Art in 2010.

I am currently employed at the University of Newcastle as a casual academic in the discipline of painting and drawing, postgraduate supervisor and early career researcher.

I exhibit locally and internationally with works in the collection at the University of Newcastle and Maitland Regional ArtGallery as well as in private collections in Australia, America and the United Kingdom.

Artist Statement

My most recent works rely on mnemonics, where intuition, chance, empiricism and the language of abstraction support ideas as visual concepts through traditional painting methodologies and materials. The process of painting through interplay between the body as a sensory tool and the materiality of the medium, sublimates the disclosure of form. These resultant abstract colour fields reference both the origins and conceptual premise of abstraction, which is palpably located through colour relationships, the use of space, the subtly of texture and line and through the phenomena of felt experience.

  1. Anne-Marie I was looking at this work for quite a while & I constantly found myself thinking of the romantic artists. These works here seems to me to have overtones of Turner for one & the English understanding of the sublime and landscape in particular. This is evident both in painting and literature of the 18th & 19th centuries especially at the height of the industrial revolution & under the influence of Ruskin. As a Mnemonic related to experience how does this correlate. Mark
